Although coffee cake is meant to accompany a cup of coffee, that doesn’t have to be the case. It's just right for breakfast, brunch, or a late afternoon snack.
Coffee cake isn’t usually thought of as a dessert dessert, but it may be just the thing after a nice meal (espresso or coffee optional). I have a feeling it would also be quite good with an ice cream scoop on top.
Whenever you decide to enjoy it, I'll just highlight: this cake is really very good. Not quite the Valentine's-perfect dessert I'd had in mind when I slotted DESSERT! into this week's editorial calendar, but the heart wants what it wants.
And my heart wanted the deep fragrance and flavor of cinnamon in a ribbon threaded through tender, toothsome spelt cake, and buttery, crunchy sweet cinnamon crumbles on top.
So here's a recipe for a very nice cinnamon crumb cake, for breakfast, Valentine's, or really, any time you are or are not considering a cup of coffee.
